The Importance of Art Education for Children Aged 6 to 11
Between the ages of 6 and 11, children gradually transition from pure imaginative expression towards an awareness of technique, proportion, and detail.
Regular participation in children's art programmes at this age has been shown to support:
-
Critical Thinking — Planning compositions and solving visual problems develops logical and analytical skills that transfer across academic subjects
-
Fine Motor Precision — Handling tools such as brushes and coloured pencils strengthens hand control, which also supports handwriting and concentration
-
Emotional Intelligence — Art provides a healthy outlet for processing feelings and experiences
-
Resilience and Patience — In a low-pressure, supportive environment, children learn to work through outcomes that do not go as planned, building perseverance
-
Cultural Awareness — Exposure to different art styles, movements, and media broadens a child's understanding of the world
At ARTTRA, these benefits are woven naturally into every session — not as separate objectives, but as the organic outcome of quality art instruction.

Class Structure and Duration
ARTTRA's children's art programme runs for 90 minutes per session, giving students ample time to fully engage with a creative project from start to finish. Unlike shorter drop-in activities, the 90-minute format allows children to genuinely learn technique — they are encouraged to slow down, observe, and refine their work rather than rush to completion.
Each session follows a consistent structure that strikes a balance between guided instruction and creative freedom:
-
Introduction — The instructor introduces the day's theme, technique, or medium, often accompanied by reference works or a demonstration
-
Guided Practice — Students work on their individual pieces with active support and feedback from the instructor throughout
-
Review and Reflection — A brief group share at the close of each session encourages children to present their work and share what they would like to try next time

Skills and Media Covered
ARTTRA's children's art programme offers a broad and progressively structured curriculum. Throughout their enrolment, students rotate through a variety of media and techniques, gradually building a diverse and well-rounded skill set:
